You cannot multi-task with the Lord and know Him more deeply, intimately, and affectionately. Sure, you need to walk in His Spirit as you do life. But to draw nearer to Him, grow closer to Him, have your affections stirred by Him, you have to get alone with Him. Jesus did (Mark 1:35; Mark 6:45-46; Mark 14:32-34; Luke 4:42; Luke 5:16; Luke 6:12).
C.S. Lewis’ once wrote that if you want to assure yourself of the Lord’s “absence” in your life then simply do the following: “Avoid silence, avoid solitude, avoid any train of thought that leads off the beaten track. Concentrate on money, sex, status, health and (above all) on your own grievances. Keep the radio on [and TV, and Computer, and Ipod, and Iphone, and...]. Live in a crowd. Use plenty of sedation. If you must read books, select them carefully. But you’d be safer to stick to the papers. You’ll find the advertisements helpful; especially those with a sexy or snobbish appeal.”
This week try to get up an hour earlier, or go to bed an hour later, and just be with Him. Ask your spouse for the gift of booking a hotel room for the night just for yourself. Have the front desk cut of access to cable, wifi, and the sort. Take your Bible, a journal, a pen… and just be with Him. Leave the office a little early, book the baby-sitter for an extra hour, and go to the park, or go to a grave yard, or go to the lake… and just be with Him.
Unplug and… be with Him.
